Why scalp health matters more when your hair is colour-treated

Most conversations about colour-treated hair focus on the lengths and ends. The parts that are visible and that clients can see changing. The scalp gets less attention, which is a problem, because the scalp is where the hair is produced. What happens at the root affects everything that grows from it.

What chemical services do to the scalp

Bleach and colour developers are alkaline, which temporarily raises the pH of the scalp during processing. For most clients this is not a problem. The scalp's natural pH recovers within a day or two. But for clients who colour frequently, or who have a scalp that is already sensitive or dry, repeated alkaline exposure can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to dryness, flaking, or increased sensitivity to subsequent services.

This is not an argument against colouring. It is an argument for paying attention to the scalp between appointments. A scalp that is in good condition tolerates chemical services better and recovers faster.

What a targeted scalp treatment involves

The scalp treatment at Arctic Whisper Lab takes 45 minutes and involves two stages. The first is an enzyme exfoliation, which loosens dead skin cells and product build-up without the abrasion of a physical scrub. The second is a custom serum blended at the chair based on the client's specific concern. Dryness, sensitivity, excess oil, or a combination.

The serum is not a retail product applied from a bottle. It is mixed from a set of concentrated actives. Hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, salicylic acid at a low percentage, and a calming botanical extract. In proportions that depend on what the scalp actually needs. The blend is noted in the client's file for consistency at future appointments.

When to add a scalp treatment to a colour appointment

The scalp treatment can be added to any colour appointment and is carried out during the processing time, so it does not add significantly to the total appointment length. It is particularly useful in the weeks following a colour correction or a bleach service, when the scalp has been under more stress than usual.

Clients who swim regularly, use hard water, or have been through a period of high stress often notice the most immediate difference. The scalp does not need to be visibly problematic to benefit from the treatment. Maintaining a healthy baseline makes subsequent colour results more even and more predictable.

If you are not sure whether a scalp treatment is relevant for you, mention it when you book and Alan Marsden will assess the scalp at the start of the appointment before recommending anything.
