What to expect from a keratin treatment: the honest version
Keratin treatments are one of the most searched-for services in any salon, and also one of the most misunderstood. The marketing around them tends toward the dramatic. 'frizz-free for six months', 'completely straight hair', 'zero maintenance'. The reality is more nuanced, and clients who understand what the treatment actually does tend to be much happier with the results.
What the treatment does to the hair
A keratin treatment works by coating the hair shaft with a keratin protein solution, which is then sealed into the cuticle using heat from a flat iron. The result is a smoother cuticle surface, which reduces frizz and makes the hair easier to manage. It does not permanently alter the hair's structure the way a chemical relaxer does. The effect fades gradually as the coating breaks down over time.
The formulas used vary significantly between products. Some contain formaldehyde as the active cross-linking agent; others use alternative aldehydes or aldehyde-free systems. At Arctic Whisper Lab, a low-formaldehyde formula is used, which requires adequate ventilation during application. The studio windows are opened for the duration of the treatment.
The application process
The treatment is applied in sections to clean, dry hair. Each section is combed through to ensure even distribution, then dried with a blow-dryer before being passed through a flat iron at a temperature calibrated to the hair's thickness and condition. Thicker, coarser hair requires a higher temperature and more passes; fine hair requires less.
The whole process takes between two and three hours depending on hair length and density. There is no shortcut to this. The flat iron work is where the treatment is actually sealed in, and rushing it produces uneven results. At Arctic Whisper Lab, the timing is set by the hair, not by the schedule.
Aftercare: what the rules actually are
The standard aftercare instruction for keratin treatments is to avoid washing the hair for 72 hours after the appointment and to use a sulphate-free shampoo thereafter. Both of these matter. Washing too soon disrupts the bonding process before it has fully set; sulphate shampoos strip the coating faster than necessary and shorten the treatment's lifespan.
The 72-hour window also means avoiding anything that puts moisture into the hair. Rain, steam, swimming, or tying the hair up in a way that leaves a crease. This is the part of the aftercare that clients find most inconvenient, and it is worth planning the appointment accordingly. Booking on a Wednesday or Thursday gives the full 72 hours before the weekend.
- No washing for 72 hours after the appointment
- Sulphate-free shampoo only from that point forward
- No swimming in chlorinated water for at least two weeks
- Avoid salt water for the first month
- Use a heat protectant before any styling with heat
Results at Arctic Whisper Lab typically last 10 to 14 weeks, depending on how often the hair is washed and what shampoo is used. The aftercare card given at the end of the appointment covers all of this in writing.
